Born in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture on March 7, 1955. After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyushu University in 1978, started working at the Oita Prefectural Office.
〇Besides work, serves as Oita Prefecture Labor Secretary General and Committee Chairman.
〇Retired from the Oita Prefectural Office in August 2000 and was elected to the position of Oita Prefectural Assembly member. Served for three terms, serving as Chief of the Prefectural Citizens Club, Chairman of the Commerce, Industry and Labor Committee, and Special Deputy Budget Committee Chairman. Elected as leader in the 2010 House of Councilors election (proportional representation). Served as the leader of the Social Democratic Party for two terms of four years and four months from November 2013. Elected for a second term in the 2019 House of Councilors election (proportional representation). Although he narrowly lost in the Reiwa 5th House of Councilors by-election (Oita Chosen Ward), he was elected for a third term in the Reiwa 7 House of Councilors election (Oita Chosen Ward).
〇My favorite words are “dream,” “sincerity,” and “effort.” The origin of the story is the working parents who worked hard to raise their children in poverty. Our greatest goal is to create a peaceful, safe and secure society, and a society in which working people can have hope.
〇 Appointed as a member of the Administrative Oversight Committee of the National Institute of Justice, currently secretary of the Constitution Review Committee, member of the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Commission, member of the Settlement Committee, and representative of the Oita Prefecture Federation of the Democratic Party of Japan.
